Dekorativnoe Iskusstvo SSSR

Dekorativnoe Iskusstvo SSSR (‘decorative arts of the USSR’) was a monthly journal focussing not only on folk, decorative, and monumental art both domestically and internationally, but also many important design issues. Published from 1957 to 1993 by the Union of Artists of the USSR, its circulation ranged from 6,000 to 42,000 copies. One of the journal’s originators and its main ideologist was the philosopher and art theorist Karl Kantor—one of the founders of the Senezh Studio. This is why Dekorativnoe Iskusstvo generally emphasized the artist’s perspective on design (including its social and cultural functions), in contrast to the scientific and engineering approach to design that dominated in Technicheskaya Estetika.
