Bit International 4: the design issue

Bit International was a bilingual quarterly magazine published from 1968 to 1972 by the organizers of New Tendencies, an international art movement based in Zagreb. Its seven issues (two of them double issues) were each dedicated to a subject area, including information theory, computer science, television, and other forms of experimental visual research. The magazine’s cover design was created by the Croatian artist and designer Ivan Picelj (1924–2011).
Released in 1969, Bit 4 was dedicated to the topic of design, featuring texts by prominent contemporary design thinkers Tomas Maldonado, Gui Bonsiepe, and Claude Schnaidt, along with influential Croatian art historians Matko Meštrović (b. 1933), Radoslav Putar (1921–94), Fedor Kritovac (1938–2011), and Vera Horvat Pintarić (b. 1926). Particular attention was paid to West Germany’s Ulm School of Design, its influence on design education, and its unfortunate end in 1968. The Croatian contributors provided an overview of Yugoslav graphic and industrial design as well.
