In 1972, Prague\u2019s Museum of Decorative Arts hosted \u2018Design and Plastics\u2019, an international exhibition curated by Milena Lamarov\u00e1 (1930\u20132006). Presented in both Czech and English, the exhibition and catalogue showcased 120 designs by international artists including Joe Colombo, Verner Panton, Olivier Mourgue, and Quasar Khanh with his inflatable objects, alongside Czechoslovak designers like V\u00e1clav Cigler, Ji\u0159\u00ed Hofman, and Miroslav Navr\u00e1til. The project was unparalleled in terms of scope and subject matter, with only the ‘New Domestic Landscapes’ exhibition presented by Emilio Ambasz at New York\u2019s MoMA 1971 as coming the closest. It was also pivotal in introducing the term \u2018design\u2019 into the Czech discourse.
For Lamarov\u00e1, the new artificial environment was being defined by \u2018the idea of lightness and flexibility .\u00a0.\u00a0. an invasion of new visual experiences in the environment\u2019s colour, transparency, and luminosity\u2019, as she wrote on page 13 of the catalogue. For the exhibition, Lamarov\u00e1 commissioned a blow-up environment with a walk-in installation of white PVC cylinders by visionary glass and light designer V\u00e1clav Cigler and scientific engineer Vladim\u00edr Fi\u0159t.
